Forever, Always, and Then Some

Chapter 49

In LA

At Angel Investigations, Fred is alone in the office working on the computer when the front door opens. She looks up to see a well dressed older gentleman.

Fred: Hello, can I help you?

Travers: Hello, I am looking for Wesley Wyndam-Price.

Fred: Wesley is not here right now, but he should be back soon I hope.

Travers: Do you mind if I wait?

Fred: Okay. You can sit.

Fred returns to her work. The door is suddenly flung open. Angel walks in and hurls his ax and it embeds into the wall beside the weapons cabinet.

Angel: Damn it this has to stop!

Cordy: He is all right, he is safe.

Angel: Only by sure luck. If it wasn’t for some sick obsessed vampire stalking her, he would be gone.

Wesley: But he isn’t. Dawn said he was okay.

Cordy: Uh Angel, the ax goes in the cabinet, not in the wall.

Angel gives her a look.

Wesley: Go call, you will feel better.

Angel heads toward the phone. Wesley notices Travers.

Wesley: Quentin?

Angel looks back but continues to the phone.

Travers: Hello Wesley. How are you?

Wesley: As if you care.

Travers: But I do.

Wesley: Just tell me why you are here.

Travers: Miss, uh Mrs. Summers suggested I come see you and meet Angel. I assume the one with the ax was him.

Wesley: Yes. He is a bit upset right now.

Travers: I can tell.

Wesley: Well someone has attempted to kidnap his son for the third night in a row. Would tend to upset most people.

Travers: Three times.

Wesley: Well this week at least.

Travers: How many times in all?

Wesley: We have actually lost count. And he is only 2 ½ months old.

Travers: Oh.

Angel walks out and leans on the wall watching Travers.

Wesley: I guess you can imagine, being a father yourself.

Travers: Must be trying.

Angel: Quentin, what would you know about tonight’s kidnapping?

Travers: Me nothing?

Angel: Interesting. Seems one of the three men spoke with an English accent.

Travers: And the others?

Angel: Never talked. Wesley those men that came to my place to get Faith, what were their names?

Wesley: Weatherby, Smith, and Collins. You think it was them?

Angel: Three men, at least one with an English accent. This only hours after Quentin here leaves my house.

Travers: I had nothing to do with any kidnapping.

Wesley: We find that hard to believe. You are head of the council.

Travers: I did not order any kidnapping.

Wesley: But you have an idea who might have.

Travers: I might.

Wesley: I suggest you call and find out. Angel does have a bad temper.

Travers looks at Angel standing with his arms crossed.

Travers: Got a phone I can use.

Wesley points toward his office. Travers and Wesley walk in. Angel stands in the doorway.

Travers: This is Travers, I need to speak to Nigel. Now. I don’t care what he is doing. Put him on the phone.

Pause

Travers: Nigel, do you know anything about a kidnapping at the Summer’s house. …………And who gave you the authority?……..Well it was a huge mistake…….You have just

Angel grabs the phone.

Angel: Nigel, this is Angel. I want to see you in my office by sunset tomorrow night.

He hand the phone back to Travers

Travers: Nigel?………..Yes, I recommend you get here and quickly. You are responsible and you will have to deal with the results…………I will see you tomorrow. Call me when you land……Goodbye.

Travers hang up.

Wesley: I assume he is coming.

Travers: Yes, I really gave him no choice.

Cordy: Ohhhhh!!!!

Angel catches her before she hits the floor.

Angel: What did you see?

Cordy: Demons, three, maybe four. Kinda purple and pussy. Near the paper mill. Attacking the workers.

Angel: Got it. Fred.

Fred walks up with water and pills in hand.

Fred: I got her. Go.

Angel, Gunn, and Wesley head to the weapons cabinet and grab what they want. Angel retrieves his ax. And then grabs two swords.

He hold one out to Travers.

Angel: I assume as a watcher you know how to use this.

Travers: Uh yes. What is going on?

Wesley: We have work. Come on.

They take off in Angel’s car.

Travers: Is anyone going to tell me what is going on?

Wesley: Quentin, we are going to kill demons. And try not to get killed ourselves.

They arrive at the scene. There is one really big demon and three much smaller ones.

Angel: I’ll take Big John, you three see if you can handle the others.

Angel attacks. Gunn and Wesley go after the others.

Wesley: Quentin, we could use help.

Travers enters the fray. Angel decapitates the large demon. He turns as Gunn is able to mortally wound another. Wesley and Travers are still battling. Gunn joins in to help. Travers looses his footing and a demon comes at him but is sent flying when Angel’s ax embeds in its skull. Wesley and Gunn finish off the last one.

Wesley: Nice work guys.

Travers: What are these things?

Wesley: Not sure, but I think they may be Quashishi demons. The one big one was probably the mother and the others were her children.

Gunn: Well we can’t leave them here.

Wesley: True.

Angel nods toward the river.

Wesley: Looks like a plan to me, I rather not have to bury them.

Angel easily lifts each one and tosses in the fast moving current.

Gunn: Looks like burial at sea to me. Lets go.

They climb back into the car.

Travers: Does this happen often?

Wesley: What throwing demons into the river?

Travers: No, running out to kill demons.

Wesley: Quentin, this is what we do. This is our business. We kill demons.

Travers: And the girl, she is some sort of demon too?

Gunn: Cordy is no demon. She was only given the gift of sight a few years ago.

Wesley: Right. Another half breed demon was sent to help Angel with the visions but right before he died he passed them to Cordy. She is just a human. Actually she went to high school with Buffy.

Travers: A demon was sent to Angel, by who?

Wesley: The Powers.

Travers: The Powers?

Wesley: The Powers that Be. The forces of good that empower warriors like Buffy and Angel. You know them. They are the ones that lead you to the next slayer.

Travers: The messages we receive about the impending birth of a new slayer.

Wesley Yes those.

Gunn: I was always wondering, how you all get that info.

Travers: Info? Oh information. How we learn about the next slayer?

Gunn: Yeah, how do you know who she is.

Travers: Actually we have our own type of seer, one member from each generation of a family in Whales. The seer is given date of birth and the names of the parents of the slayer when the mother is about 3 months along. We then have to find the parents and the child. Sometimes it has taken us years to locate a particular set of parents. Some names are too common and we have to check out a number of them before we can see which one gave birth to a baby girl on that date. Or sometimes the parents are in some remote region, with very little record. I can only recall one time in all the writings that they didn’t locate her until right before she was called. But now a days with technology, we have narrowed down in less than a year.

Gunn: So you know even before she is born, her name.

Travers: Her name, no we don’t know that. That is up to the parents. We just know who the parents are.

Gunn: Interesting, and how do you know when to contact the next girl.

Travers: The same seer tell us when one has passed away. When a girl becomes next on the list, she is assigned a watcher. As soon as we learn of the death, he immediately contacts the girl.

Angel: I remember when Buffy was called. She looked so scared and confused.

Travers: You saw her called?

Angel: Yes, I was there. I was sent by the Powers to help her. I was hiding in the shadows outside her school when Marrick first approached her.

Travers: The Powers sent you, how?

Angel: Another demon, Whistler.

Travers: Why is the council not aware of any of this?

Angel: Giles knows everything. But as far as the council is concerned I am just another vampire, so why would they care?

Travers: Oh.

In Sunnydale.

Willow: Buffy he is okay. He didn’t even get a scratch.

Buffy: But Willow I was so scared. I never get scared.

Willow: I know. But I would hate to be in the shoes of who ever did this when you and Angel catch up to them.

Buffy: You are so right.

Conner starts fussing.

Spike: What is wrong with him?

Buffy: Hungry.

Spike: Oh.

Willow: I am finished with fishing bullets out of Spike, do you want me to fix him a bottle?

Buffy: I think it should be okay for me to nurse again. Don’t you?

Willow: Yeah those drugs they gave you should be gone by now.

Spike: On that note I am leaving.

Buffy: Spike, no please stay.

Spike: What?

Buffy: I would just feel better if both of us were here tonight. Just until we know those guys are not coming back.

Willow: You still think it was council men.

Buffy: I do. Spike?

Spike: Fine, I will stay but someone needs to go get me something to eat.

Buffy: Check the bottom shelf of the fridge. Angel may have left something.

Spike: Angel leftovers. Goody.

Buffy: Spike.

Spike: Okay blood is blood.

The phone rings.

Willow: Hello. Just a sec. (hands the phone to Buffy) It’s your husband.

Buffy: Hello honey.

Angel: I wanted to call and check on you and Conner again.

Buffy: We are fine just like I said last time. What did you find out from Travers.

Angel: He is declaring innocence. Blames a guy named Nigel.

Buffy: Nigel, I can believe it. I really do not like him. Pompous jerk.

Angel: Well he is coming to see me tomorrow. He will not be so pompous then.

Buffy: You can’t kill him.

Angel: Who says.

Buffy: I do. But you can make him say uncle. Hey video tape it. I need a good laugh.

Angel: I see you are getting your sense of humor back.

Buffy: Only cause I am sitting here watching you son go to town on his dinner. He is happy to return to his favorite meal.

Angel: Huh, oh, nothing is sweeter than his momma.

Buffy: What a sweet talker you are.

Angel: So are you going to be okay tonight.

Buffy: Yes, Spike agreed to stay. He is actually in the kitchen looking for dinner. Will he find any?

Angel: Should. You want him to stay? In the house?

Buffy: Yes, I feel better with two of us, since you are not here. And no I don’t want you to come. You need to stay and work.

Angel: I know. Cordy had a vision earlier. Four less demons. Oh and I took Quentin with us.

Buffy: Did he panic?

Angel: No he actually held his own for awhile, well until he fell.

Buffy: And again no video.

Angel: No, you just have to use your imagination.

Buffy: No, I am to busy imagining other more wonderful things.

Angel: You are a little minx.

Buffy: But you love it.

Angel: I do. Now let me say goodnight. Oh and lock you door. Don’t want you know who to get any ideas.

Buffy: You are the most jealous man I know.

Angel: I have to be, what man in his right mind wouldn’t want you.

Buffy: On that note, goodnight. Love you

Angel: Love you.

Hang up

Spike: I am going to retch.

Buffy: Bad blood?

Spike: No you two making kissy face over the phone. Enough to make me heave.

Buffy: On that note I am taking Conner and going to bed.

LA next evening.

Angel is sitting in the lobby. The front doors open. Travers and Nigel walk in.

Angel: Hello Quentin, I see you recovered from last night.

Travers: Actually feel quite invigorated. Have not swung a sword in quite awhile. Glad I could remember how. But I do want to thank you for not allowing that creature to kill me.

Angel: Just part of the job. I am assuming this is Nigel. Buffy is right he is quite pompous looking.

Travers hides a smirk.

Nigel: Yes, I am Nigel. I believe you requested to see me today.

Angel: Requested? I believe the word I would use is ordered, but not the issue. The issue is the kidnapping of my son. I understand that was your less than bright idea.

Nigel: The council is aware of the child’s unique parentage and we feel the need to ascertain his true nature.

Angel: Well forget it. Not going to happen. But now my question is what do I do about this major error in judgment. A hundred years or more I would have just killed you. But luckily for you I no longer kill humans. But now I guessing you heard that. I considered calling you out for a fight, but you would most likely get killed, with in two seconds. So I thought why not let someone else do the fighting for me. Make it a little more fair. So this way.

Nigel: Huh.

Travers: Nigel I think you have been challenged to fight and you luckily are getting his second. Oh and no way will I be yours.

Angel takes them to the basement. Nigel notices Gunn and Wesley both standing with swords. Other various weapons are scattered around.

Nigel: Wesley.

Wesley: Nigel.

Travers: Angel, I don’t believe that Nigel has a chance with either of these gentlemen anymore than with you.

Nigel gives Travers a look.

Angel: Actually I agree. They are here as spectators. Oh and I believe one of them is running the video camera. Buffy’s request.

Nigel: Than who do you expect me to fight.

Angel: Oh my best friend. Cordy?

Cordy walks out from behind Gunn and Wes, she takes a sword from Gunn and Wesley hands the other to Nigel.

Nigel: You expect me to fight a girl.

Angel: Not any girl. A member of Angel Investigations that has been trained by me.

Cordy: And Buffy.

Angel: Oh yeah Nigel. Cordy here went to high school with Buffy and was involved in many of our adventures. I think she is more than a match for you.

Nigel: I am not fighting a girl.

Angel: Oh then you will fight me. Sorry Cordy. Hand to hand or swords?

Nigel: You people are insane.

Angel: No more insane than kidnapping an innocent child from his home.

Nigel: Fine, I will take on the girl but she better not cry.

Cordy looks at Angel.

Angel: You just keep piling on the mistakes, Nigel.

Nigel removes his jacket and shirt. In his t-shirt and slacks he holds up his sword in salute.

The fight begins.
